Interview with Moby in Seventeen Magazine

My little sister showed me this... bizarre, isn't it?

MOBY

"This technohead SWM hates smoking and overprocessed pop. He loves dogs, girl singers, and dancing. If you can whip up a great vegan meal, you might be his match.

1. What were you like at 17?
I was a fairly good student. I was also a punk-rocker/new-waver and I played in two bands - one called AWOL and one called Vatican Commandoes. I did have a girlfriend, but we never touched each other, which was profoundly disappointing to me.

2. How do you know when it's really love?
When you love someone - it's a simple answer, but that's the truth.

3. Who is your best friend and how did you meet each other?
My friend Kelly and I met three years ago in Boston at a nightclub. We dated for awile and now we're best friends. We're even opening a little vegan restaurant together called Teany on Manhattan's Lower East Side. I've been a vegan for 16 years. I'm a lousy cook, so I like to go to great restaurants.

4. What makes you happier than anything else in the world?
Dogs. Very simply, dogs.

5. Who is your role model?
Christ, because he espoused the virtues of humility, love, compassion, non-judgementalism, and forgiveness.

6. If you could trade places with anyone in the world for one day, who would it be and why?
Jet Li. It would be amazing to be a martial arts expert for a day.

7. What was your first kiss like?
It was with a woman - well, a girl at the time - named Carold. We were in her bedroom and I was 12 years old. I was terrified and she broke up with me afterward because I didn't know how to kiss.

8. What should be illegal that isn't?
Smoking. It especially bugs me when parents smoke in front of their kids.

9. What is your motto?
Don't take yourself too seriously.

10. Who's your celebrity crush?
Scarlett Johansson from Ghost World.

11. Have you ever read a self-help book and then acted on its advice?
No. Should I? Probably.

12. What is your favorite childhood memory?
Maybe the first time I went to a junior high school dance. I was 11, and it was the first time I ever danced and the first time I was in a dark, loud place. I thought it was amazing.

13. Why is your new album called 18? Couldn't you have called it 17 just for us?
There are 18 songs on the CD, so 17 would have been a misnomer. And 18 is a very distinguished and elegant number - or so I believe.

14. Do you prefer working with female vocalists?
I don't discriminate according to gender, but I guess I do slightly prefer working with women, mainly because I love beautiful female vocals.

15. Your music used to be really confrontational, but now it's almost soothing. What made you change your tune?
I realized that most people's lives are difficult enough without the addition of difficult and confrontational music. I don't want to add to the strife in the world. I'd like my music to help make things better for people.

16. What bands are you into?
The Strokes,...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead, Goldfrapp, Clinic and The Clash. I despise music that's made solely for a love of money - the whole "manufactured pop" trend seems very tired to me.

17. Gwen Stefani licked your head in your video for South Side. Was she the first to do it? The last?
I believe that I will keep this information to myself, seeing as I am a consummate professional."
