The Californian Dialect

I've come to the conclusion that the Californian dialect is badly formed. I mean, when someone tells a story, the expressions, "and he was like" "and I was like" fail to differentiate between what someone said, what they were thinking, and what the speaker thinks they were thinking. Example: "So I smiled, and I was like, 'Yes! and he was like, 'Awesome.' " Was the speaker saying "Yes," or thinking it? What about the guy? Did he really say "Awesome," or was he thinking it? Was he even thinking it, or was the speaker merely expressing her own opinion as to what he might be thinking? Still more perplexing is how Californians (myself included) can understand what the hell is going on in one of these stories as it is being told. Mystery of life, I guess.
